131 Reds Earn Academic All-Canadian In 2019-20

(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB Reds are proud to announce that 131 REDS student-athletes achieved U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian status during the 2019-2020 school year.
It’s the largest class of Academic All-Canadians in REDS history, and the first time UNB has had more than 100 Academic All-Canadians in a single class.
“This is an incredible achievement,” said John Richard, UNB’s Director of Athletics. “It demonstrates the commitment that our student-athletes have to both their studies and their sport.”
The 131 Academic All-Canadians came from a total of 255 student-athletes who used U SPORTS eligibility in 2019-20. That’s almost 51%.
“Just over half of our student-athletes reached this prestigious status,” said Richard. “I’m so proud to be associated with such a dedicated and diligent group.”
To qualify as an Academic All-Canadian, a student-athlete must post a grade point average of 3.5 or better (80%+) while competing in a varsity level sport.
UNB’s Academic All-Canadian class of 2019-20 is spread over 17 of the REDS 18 varsity level teams.
“Being named an Academic All-Canadian is not easy,” said Richard. “It takes a great deal of work to balance one’s academic and athletic commitments. The support of coaches, team staff, teammates, faculty and staff is essential. Our student-athletes are very fortunate to have tremendous support from our faculties, our staff, and our Athletics administration.”
It’s difficult to identify individuals in such a distinguished class, but two student-athletes have been named as the REDS’ Top Female and Male Academic All-Canadians for 2019-20.
Mikaela Dodig, of Bolton, Ontario, in her fourth season with the REDS’ women’s basketball team, was named a 2nd Team Atlantic University Sport All-Star and her team’s Most Valuable Player, all while maintaining a 4.2 GPA in the final year of her Kinesiology degree program.
In his fourth season with UNB’s men’s track and field team, Jarod Manuel, of Baie Sainte-Anne, NB, earned a 4.3 GPA in his Business Administration studies. Manuel was the AUS champion in both the men’s shot put and weight throw. He finished 6th in both events at the U SPORTS championships. He was named the AUS Field Athlete of the Year, and was also his team’s MVP.
“Mikaela and Jarod are both exceptional students and athletes,” said Richard. “They’re shining examples of what we hope every student-athlete can achieve here.”
In lieu of UNB’s traditional Academic All-Canadian Breakfast, the REDS hosted an on-line celebration of their class of 2019-20.
“It’s a shame that we couldn’t gather to celebrate our record-sized class, but right now, it’s just not possible,” said Richard. “We look forward to future years and the return of in-person celebration of our Academic All-Canadians.”
