REDS Down Panthers In Pre-Season Play
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS beat the UPEI Panthers 59-54 Saturday afternoon in Atlantic University Sport exhibition men's basketball action at UNB's Richard J. Currie Center.
The REDS used an 8-0 run in the first quarter to build an early 8-3 lead and never really looked back.
UNB led 38-28 at the half and held the Panthers at arm's length for most of the rest of the way.
UPEI mounted a late challenge, but came up short, falling 59-54.
The win improves UNB's pre-season record to 3-and-0, while the Panthers are now 2-and-1.
Marcus Barnes (Kitchener, ON) and Eden Otshudi (Hamilton, ON) led the REDS with 13 points each.
Conner Landell (St. Catharines, ON) grabbed nine rebounds for UNB.
UPEI's Daniel Longarela (Madrid, Spain) recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds while Kyree Thompson (North Preston, NS) scored 11.
The Panthers' next action comes Friday when they're in Antigonish for the Coach K Pre-Season Invitational. UPEI faces Saint Mary's in their first game.
The REDS return to action on October 18th, when they take on Concordia at the Carleton Tournament, in Ottawa. UNB will also face the host Ravens and the York Lions that weekend.
