REDS Win, Sweep Weekend
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS took an early first quarter lead and held it the rest of the way in a 70-52 win over the UPEI Panthers in Atlantic University Sport men's basketball action, Saturday at UNB's Richard J. Currie Center.
Marcus Barnes and Eden Otshudi scored 17 points each to lead the REDS while Brandon Laryea scored 11 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had five assists. Laryea was named Tim Horton's Player of the Game.
The home team jumped out to an early 12-6 lead mid-way through the opening quarter prompting a Panthers timeout. UNB led 16-10 after ten minutes of play.
UNB piled on 25 in the second quarter and led 41-28 at half-time.
A strong REDS defensive effort in the second half kept the Panthers from establishing anything that might resemble a comeback.
UNB improved to 2-and-0 with the 70-52 victory.
Nicolás Gonzalez Longarela led the Panthers with a game-high 18 points while Aleer Aleer-Leek came off the UPEI bench to score 16.
Connor Landell added 10 for UNB.
The REDS got just eight points off their bench.
UNB will now take their 2-0 record on the road, visiting Cape Breton next Friday and Saturday.
The Panthers head home and will host the Saint Mary's Huskies on Friday.
