(HALIFAX, NS) The UNB REDS season came to an end Saturday night in a 78-69 loss to the Acadia Axemen in the semi-finals at the Atlantic University Sport Basketball Championships, in Halifax.
In a close first half, the REDS trailed 17-15 after one quarter and were down just two, 30-28, at the break.
Acadia opened a small cushion in third and led 53-45 headed to the final quarter.
The REDS stayed close, cutting the Acadia lead to just four at 65-61, but couldn't get any closer.
In the late stages, UNB did pull to within five, but were then forced to foul down the stretch, allowing the Axemen to score uncontested to finish the game.
Marcus Barnes led the REDS with 22 points in the loss while Eden Otshudi dropped 13.
Brandon Laryea pulled down 10 rebounds.
Matthias Muscroft came off the UNB bench to score 10 points.
Robbie Grant scored 22 for Acadia while Ryan Regault hit for 19.
The Axemen will face UPEI in Sunday's conference championship game.
