(FREDERICTON, NB) Luca D'Amato scored at 3:14 of overtime to give the UNB REDS a 4-3 win over the Moncton Aigles Bleus in Atlantic University Sport men's hockey action, Wednesday night at UNB's Aitken Centre.
The first-year REDS defenceman took a pass in the slot from Cody Morgan and fired a shot past a sprawling Olivier Adam in the Moncton net.
The visiting Aigles Bleus opened the scoring on Michael Cyr's fifth goal of the season and took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
Camaryn Baber pulled the REDS even at 2:38 of the second period, scoring a short-handed goal on a breakaway.
Jules Boilard restored Moncton's lead with less than five minutes remaining in the second period.
Morgan tied the game 2-2 just over a minute into the third period and set up a go-ahead goal by Jax Dubois at 15:42.
Moncton's William Basque scored with just 42 seconds left on the clock to force overtime, where D'Amato emerged as the hero.
Adam, who took the loss in the Moncton net, made 18 saves on 20 shots after coming on in relief of starter Nathan Darveau, who made 24 saves on 26 shots.
Remi Delafontaine saw 25 shots and stopped 22 to earn the win.
With two assists to go along with his goal, Morgan was named the Tim Horton's Player of the Game.
With the win, the REDS are now 7-3-1-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL), good for a share of first place in the AUS standings. Moncton has an identical 7-3-1-0 record.
The REDS go on the road on Friday, visiting the UPEI Panthers.
The next night, the Panthers will visit Moncton.
