(HALIFAX, NS) The No. 2 seeded UNB REDS dropped a 7-4 decision to the Université du Québec à Trois-Riviéres in the semi-finals at the U SPORTS Men's Hockey Championship, Saturday evening in Halifax.
The No. 3 seeded Patriotes scored on game's first shot on goal, just 12 seconds after the opening faceoff, and again at the 4:42 mark of the first period.
UQTR led 4-0 after 20 minutes of play.
Despite trailing, UNB did outshoot UQTR 12-9 in the first.
Thomas Larouche gave UNB some hope when he scored at 7:21 of the second to cut the Patriotes lead to three goals.
UQTR restored their four-goal lead at 12:18.
Cody Morgan made it a 5-2 game with a goal less than a minute later, but UQTR scored late in the second and early in the third period to go up by five.
Braeden MacPhee's goal at 9:08 of the third cut the deficit to four, but the REDS ran into penalty trouble in the second half of the period and couldn't mount a complete comeback.
MacPhee added another goal with 1:05 to play to make the final 7-4.
Conor Frenette led the Patriotes with three goals and three assists.
Felix Lafrance and Charles Beaudoin both had a goal and two assists.
Eli Barnett had a pair of assists for the REDS.
UNB's Remi Delafontaine made 16 saves on 23 shots while William Grimard made 23 saves on 27 shots in the UQTR net.
The REDS now move into Sunday's bronze medal game, where they'll face the Windsor Lancers.
That game goes at 9:00am.
UQTR will meet the host and eighth seeded Saint Mary's Huskies in Sunday's University Cup championship game. The Huskies beat the Lancers 4-1 in Saturday's other semi-final.
The championship game is scheduled for a 1:00pm start.
