Marcil Moving From Fairbanks To Fredericton
(FREDERICTON, NB) The eight-time defending Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey champions, the UNB REDS, are adding veteran defenceman Hugo Marcil to their recruiting class of 2026.
Marcil, from Bourget, Ontario, spent the 2025-2026 season at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks after a major junior career that saw him skate with Moncton and Sherbrooke, of the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League.
“We’re extremely excited to get a character player like Hugo,” said REDS’ head coach Rob Hennigar. “He comes highly recommended and fans will love his grit and style of play.”
In 2025-2026, Marcil played in 18 games with Alaska-Fairbanks, registering six assists.
He began his QMJHL career with the Wildcats, scoring four goals and 14 assists during the 2022-2023 season.
He spent 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 in Sherbrooke, where he played in 127 regular season games, scoring four goals and 34 assists.
“Once I visited UNB, it felt like home,” said Marcil. “The family, the culture, and the drive to constantly want to get better than yesterday really stood out to me. I want to win, and the REDS have the recipe.”
Marcil chose the REDS over other U SPORTS and NCAA options.
“I’m a player with a lot of heart and compete,” he said. “I might be small, but I play big. I’m not scared of anything. I’m a two-way defenceman who can move the puck and join the rush.”
Marcil says he’s emotional and competitive and describes himself as a leader.
His off-ice goals include completing a double major and, potentially, pursuing a master’s degree.
On the ice, he’s focused on producing.
“I want to win,” he said. “I want to keep developing as a hockey player and a person and I want to give back to the community and the organization.”
“Hugo competes every night and he’s relentless when he plays,” said Coach Hennigar. “He can play at both ends of the ice and his skating will be a separator at this level. He’ll be relied upon in all situations.”
Marcil will study Arts while attending UNB.
