Jeong And Howse Lead REDS
(SAINT JOHN, NB) Tony Jeong and Jared Howse scored big wins to lead the UNB REDS men's
track and field team in the weekend's UNB Invitational, at the Irving Oil Field House, in Saint John.
Jeong won the men's weight throw and finished second in the shot put, while Howse won the Dave Thoms Invitational men's mile and was a key part of UNB's victory in the 4-by-800-metre relay, an event in which the REDS team qualified for the U SPORTS Championships, March 5-7 at the University of Manitoba.
Howse won the mile in a time of 4:08.67, beating teammate Silas Conlin-Morse by about 7/10ths of a second. Howse's time ranks him sixth in U SPORTS in the 1500-metres.
UNB men also won the 4-by-200-metre relay and finished second in the 4-by-400. UNB's time in the 4-by-200 qualified them for the U SPORTS Championships.
UNB's Hayden McKinnon won the 600-metres, beating teammate Caden Wolverton to the finish line, and Oliver Arnfast won the 60-metre hurdles.
Jackson Banks was second in the men's 60-metres, finishing just 1/100th of a second back of the winner.
In a very tight men's 300-metres, first-year RED Camrie Sharpe ran second while teammate Owen Wood was fourth, a mere 22/100ths of a second back of Sharpe.
The REDS are now preparing for the Atlantic University Sport Championships which take place February 20thand 21st, in Moncton.
