REDS Drop Five-Setter
(FREDERICTON, NB) For the second day in a row, the UNB REDS pushed the Montreal Carabins to five sets, falling 3-2 in RSEQ men's volleyball action, Saturday afternoon at UNB's Richard J. Currie Center.
The visitors took an extended opening set, scoring the final two points in an exciting 27-25 win.
In the second set, the REDS established a 17-12 lead which prompted a Montreal time-out, but the REDS push continued.
On the strength of a Finn McMorran ace and a set point block by Travis Pruim and Benjamin Sullivan, UNB took the second set 25-19.
Montreal took control of the third set early, building a 6-3 lead.
The REDS rallied to pull even at 12-12, but Montreal surged ahead again and never relinquished their lead on route to a 25-20 victory.
UNB dominated play in the fourth, winning 25-14, but Montreal was the stronger team in the deciding set, scoring a 15-10 win for the 3-2 triumph.
Montreal's Lucas Genier led the Carabins with 16 kills and eight blocks while Étienne Grenier had 11 digs and 10 blocks.
Maxime St-Denis had a match-high 47 assists.
Nicolas Losier and Lucas Maffia registered 16 and 12 kills respectively for UNB while Sullivan had 10 kills, 11 digs, and three blocks.
McMorran finished with 40 assists and Alex Bourque had a match-high 15 digs.
The REDS see their record fall to 2-4 while Montreal improves to 4-1.
The Carabins return to action next weekend, on home court, against Dalhousie.
The REDS will visit Sherbrooke on November 28th and 29th for games at 7:00pm Atlantic and 2:00pm Atlantic respectively.
