Poirier Wins U SPORTS Bronze
(THUNDER BAY, ON) Koen Poirier is coming home from the U SPORTS Wrestling Championships, in Thunder Bay, Ontario, with a bronze medal.
Poirier defeated Guelph’s Austin Murphy in Saturday’s bronze medal bout in the 90-kilogram weight class.
“I’m excited to win a medal for UNB,” said Poirier. “We had a great year and I’m already looking forward to next year.”
Poirier beat wrestlers from the University of Toronto, University of Calgary, and York University on route to the bronze medal bout.
His only loss of the weekend was to Yazdan Farohizad from Brock, the eventual gold medallist.
“Koen worked extremely hard in our off-season, and he placed at several tournaments this season,” said REDS’ head coach Don Ryan. “Winning this bronze medal is a great way to wrap up his fourth year.”
In the medal contest, Poirier defeated Murphy 10-0.
“We had a plan to shoot low leg attacks, and to not tie up with him,” said Poirier. “I outworked him and, with my conditioning, I was able to push him.”
This is Poirier’s first U SPORTS medal but may not be his last.
“He’ll be looking to move up on the podium as he’ll be back for his fifth year,” said Coach Ryan.
