Poirier Grabs Gold At UNB Open
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS men’s wrestling team finished third in the men’s team standings at the UNB Open this past weekend.
With 11 points, UNB finished behind teams from the Montreal Wrestling Club and Nova Scotia.
Koen Poirier led the REDS, winning the gold medal in the 90-kilogram weight class.
Jeremy Leger won the bronze medal in the 82-kilo class.
“Koen has been having an excellent season,” said REDS’ head coach Don Ryan. “He won gold and silver medals at two other events, and trained with the national team recently. Koen wrestled extremely well this weekend and we look for him to challenge for a top spot at the U SPORTS Championships at the end of the month.”
The national university championships take place February 27th and 28th, at Lakehead University, in Thunder Bay.
