REDS Open Campbell Tourney With Win
(FREDERICTON, NB) Kylee Speedy made a triumphant return to action Friday night, scoring 16 points to lead the UNB REDS in a 75-46 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns in pre-season play at UNB's Richard J. Currie Center.
The game was the first for both teams at UNB's Helen Campbell Tournament.
Speedy hadn't played since suffering a knee injury on February 10th, 2024, a period of more than 600 days.
Veteran forward Katie Butts scored 13 points and Maheva Ngassam collected ten rebounds for the home team. Butts was named the Stewart-McKelvey Player of the Game.
Kamryn Deklerk led the Pronghorns with 12 points.
In the opening game of the day, the Ottawa Gee Gees held off the STFX X-Women 59-58.
The game was close throughout, with Ottawa holding a slim 36-33 lead at the half.
With less than three minutes to play the game was interrupted when a fire alarm sounded. Action was delayed for about 15 minutes.
Allie McCarthy, a native of Grand Falls, New Brunswick, led the Gee Gees with 12 points, three assists and seven rebounds. She was named the Stewart-McKelvy Player of the Game.
The Campbell Tournament resumes Saturday with the X-Women taking on Lethbridge. Tip-off is at 1:00pm. At 5:00pm, the REDS face the Gee Gees.
The Campbell Tournament runs through Sunday.
