REDS Capture Campbell Tourney Title
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS captured the title in their 2025 Stewart-McKelvey Helen Campbell Tournament with a 56-40 victory over the STFX X-Women, Sunday at UNB's Richard J. Currie Center.
The REDS went 3-and-0 on the weekend, recording wins over Lethbridge and Ottawa as well as the X-Women.
Addie Mombourquette led the REDS on Sunday with 14 points. She was named the Stewart-McKelvey Player of the Game.
Veteran guards Katie McAffee and Kylee Speedy each tallied 12 points.
McAffee scored half of her points in a 31 second span of the fourth quarter when she hit back-to-back three-point shots.
McAffee and UNB's Katie Butts, who left Sunday's game mid-way through the first quarter, were named tournament all-stars. Speedy was named the tournament's MVP.
Abby Mercer scored eight points off the bench to lead the X-Women while Shannon Neita scored seven points and collected nine rebounds. Veteran guard Kristine Cooper was named a tournament all-star.
In the pre-season tournament's penultimate game, two native New Brunswickers led the Ottawa Gee Gees over the Lethbridge Pronghorns 88-59.
Fredericton's Bailey Russell and Allie McCarthy, of Grand Falls, each scored 27 points to lead the Ottawa attack. Russell was named the Player of the Game and both were named tournament all-stars.
Ottawa finished the Campbell Tournament with a 2-1 record. The X-Women were 1-2 and Lethbridge went 0-3.
The REDS continue their exhibition season next weekend in Kingston, Ontario, at the Queen's Tournament. UNB will face York and Bishop's as well as the hosts.
UNB opens the 2025-2026 Atlantic University Sport regular season schedule on home court, Friday, October 24th when they host the UPEI Panthers. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00pm.
