REDS Open With W
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS opened their 2025-2026 Atlantic University Sport women's basketball season with a 64-49 victory over the UPEI Panthers Friday evening at UNB's Richard J. Currie Center.
Veteran point guard Katie McAffee scored 17 points to lead the REDS. She was named the Tim Horton's Player of the Game.
The REDS struggled to find consistency in the opening quarter and trailed 10-7 after the first ten minutes.
In the second, UNB opened with a 14-4 run to go ahead 21-14, led by an aggressive Kylee Speedy. The fourth-year guard scored 12 first-half points.
The REDS took a 27-23 lead to the half-time break.
UNB began the second half with a 9-0 run to extend their lead to 36-23 and prompt a UPEI time-out.
That did little to rein in the REDS who outscored the Panthers 26-10 in the third quarter to take a 20-point lead into the final frame.
The Panthers were able to rebound in the fourth, outscoring the REDS 16-11, but it was too little and too late.
Grace Lancaster scored a game-high 21 points for the Panthers.
Speedy finished the night with 14 points and nine rebounds for UNB while Maheva Ngassam recorded an early season double-double with 10 points and a dozen rebounds.
The Panthers and REDS meet again Saturday afternoon in the second of their two game weekend series. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00pm.
