REDS Hold Off Panthers
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS improved to 2-and-0 with a 71-65 victory over the UPEI Panthers in Atlantic University Sport women's basketball action, Saturday afternoon at UNB's Richard J. Currie Center.
Second-year RED Zoe Olscamp led the REDS with 14 points and 13 rebounds while Kylee Speedy scored a dozen points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out five assists. Speedy was named the Tim Horton's Player of the Game.
The teams played a spirited first quarter, trading baskets for the most part. UPEI led the REDS 19-15 after ten minutes of play.
The Panthers continued to push the pace in the second, building a 28-19 lead less than three minutes into the quarter and prompting a UNB timeout.
The REDS surged to life late in the second with a 7-0 run to trim the gap. Then a three-point basket by Leah Travers made it a 33-31 game with under two minutes to play in the half.
Alyssa Jenkins added three more on an and-1 play with about 10 seconds left and the REDS took a 37-35 lead to the half-time break.
The teams erupted for a combined 45 points in the third quarter, 24-21 in favour of the REDS who extended their lead to 61-56.
The close play continued in the final quarter as the Panthers pulled within three, at 67-64, with 5:00 left on the clock.
UNB then held the Panthers at arm's length for their second win of the season.
Grace Lancaster scored a game-high 27 points to lead UPEI and Devon Lawlor added 13.
Addie Mombourquette and Katie McAffee each scored 11 for UNB.
The REDS hit the road for the first time this season next weekend. They visit Cape Breton for a two-game series on Friday and Saturday.
The Panthers return home to host the Saint Mary's Huskies on Friday.
