REDS Complete Weekend Road Sweep
(ST. JOHN'S, NL) The UNB REDS rallied from a slim first half deficit to score a 65-57 win over the Memorial Sea-Hawks in Atlantic University Sport women's basketball action, Saturday evening in St. John's.
"It's always tough to get two wins on the road, so I'm really proud of the grit we showed to get the job done," said REDS' head coach Erin McAleenan.
The home team led 17-16 after 10 minutes and extended their lead slightly in the second quarter, taking a 35-30 lead to the half.
Cue the REDS comeback.
UNB went on a 19-3 run to open the third quarter, building 51-38 lead.
The REDS limited the Sea-Hawks to just seven third quarter points.
"I thought we dug in at the defensive end in the third and played through adversity," said Coach McAleenan. "Our depth really showed as we had contributions from a number of players tonight."
In the fourth quarter, UNB led by as much as 20, but Memorial was able rebound, but was never able to fully recover.
Katie Butts led the REDS with 13 points and eight rebounds while Maheva Ngassam came off the UNB bench to score eight points and grab nine rebounds.
Former Sea-Hawk Alyssa Jenkins contributed eight points for the REDS and Clancy MacIntyre added seven rebounds.
Serena Phillips led all scorers with 25 points in the Memorial loss. Phillips was 16-of-20 from the free throw line.
Eavan McLaughlin scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
With the win, the REDS are now 9-1 and continue to lead the AUS.
The Sea-Hawks are 3-4 and sit in fifth place.
The REDS return home to face the Acadia Axewomen. That game goes Saturday and tip-off is scheduled for 6:00pm.
The Sea-Hawks visit UPEI the same night.
