REDS Dominate OT, Down Axewomen
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS outscored the Acadia Axewomen 14-1 in overtime to register a 74-61 win over the Acadia Axewomen in Atlantic University Sport women's basketball action, Saturday evening at UNB's Richard J. Currie Center.
The REDS held a slim 32-29 lead at the half.
Down the stretch, in regulation time, Addie Mombourquette scored with 30 seconds to play to put UNB up 60-59.
The Axewomen tied it on a free throw with seven seconds left, sending the teams to the extra frame.
That's where the REDS dominated, scoring the first eight points and holding the visitors to just a single.
Maheva Ngassam led the REDS with 13 points and nine rebounds while Mombourquette finished the night with 13 points. She went 7-for-10 from the free throw line and was named the Tim Horton's Player of the Game.
Katie McAffee scored 10 points and dished out five assists.
Alyssa Jenkins and Zoe Olscamp came off the REDS bench to score nine and six points respectively. Jenkins also pulled down seven rebounds while Olscamp grabbed eight.
Sarah Delorey led the Axewomen with 16 points and eight rebounds. Bianca Helmig added 13 points and eight rebounds.
With the win, the REDS are 10-1 and continue to lead the AUS standings.
They return to action after the holiday and exam period break. UNB hosts Cape Breton on Friday, January 9th, 2026. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00pm.
