(FREDERICTON, NB) Katelyn Scott's second period goal that almost wasn't a goal stood as the winner as the UNB REDS beat l'Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues 4-2 in Atlantic University Sport women's hockey, on Saturday night at UNB's Aitken Centre.
Scott fired a shot from a sharp angle that clearly beat Moncton goaltender Molly Collin at 15:46 of the second period but play continued for more than a minute before a whistle. During the stoppage the officials got together and, after a brief conference, ruled Scott's shot had entered the net and awarded her the goal.
That gave UNB a 3-2 lead in a game that saw the momentum swing a number of times.
Moncton opened the scoring, on the powerplay, in the first period.
Just past the four-minute mark of the second, Payton Hargreaves scored a powerplay goal of her own to tie the game for UNB.
But just eight seconds later, Moncton replied and restored their advantage.
Hargreaves then set up first-year RED Keira Grant in the slot. She beat Collin from close range to make it a 2-2 game at the 11:45 mark.
About four minutes later, Scott scored her goal.
Olivia Eustace scored the only goal of the third period, into an empty net, to seal the victory for UNB.
Hannah LeClair improved to 3-0, making 15 saves on 17 shots in the UNB net while Collin made 22 saves on 25 shots.
UNB continues to lead the AUS and is now 9-2-0-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL). Moncton is 6-4-1-0 and sits in fourth place.
Both teams are on the road for their next games, on Friday. Moncton visits Saint Mary's while the REDS are in Antigonish to face the STFX X-Women. Both games are scheduled to start at 7:00pm.
