(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS lost the game but earned a single point to maintain their hold on first place in Atlantic University Sport's women's hockey standings.
The STFX X-Women scored a 2-1 shootout win over the REDS Saturday afternoon at UNB's Aitken Centre.
For two periods, goaltending and defence dominated and the teams were scoreless late in the third.
At the 15:19 mark of the third, Samantha Morrison scored to give the X-Women a 1-0 lead.
Then with 1:28 to play and the REDS on the powerplay, Olivia Eustace potted the tying goal.
Overtime solved nothing and Morrison was the only shooter to score in the ensuing shootout, giving X the victory.
Brooklyn Oakes made 26 saves on 27 shots to earn the win in the X net while Cassie McCallum made 14 saves on 16 shots for UNB.
With the loss, the REDS record is 15-4-0-1 (W-L-OTL-SOL). The single point earned Saturday gives UNB 31 points and allows them to hang on to first place.
The X-Women improve to 15-5-0-0, good for 30 points and second place.
The REDS are back in action on Wednesday night when they visit UPEI for a 7:00pm faceoff.
The X-Women are at home to Saint Mary's on Friday.
