REDS Down Tommies

(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS returned to the win column Saturday night with a 2-1 win over the St. Thomas Tommies in Atlantic University Sport women's hockey action at UNB's Aitken Centre.

Saturday's win follows UNB's 3-2 overtime loss at St. Thomas on Friday and gives the REDS three of a possible four points from the weekend.

The REDS got on the scoreboard first, in the final minute of the opening period.

Olivia Eustace fed a pass to Rylee Strohm, working down from her defensive position, who fired a quick one-timer past Tommies' goalie Katie Sweeney.

In the second period, Avery Thurston found Keira Grant in the slot and the first-year RED beat Sweeney with a low wrist shot.

Grant was named the Tim Horton's Player of the Game.

Early in the third, Amy Dvernichuk scored to make it a 2-1 game, but that as close as the visitors would get.

Cassie McCallum made 20 saves on 21 shots for the win in the UNB net while Sweeney faced 35 shots, stopping 33.

The REDS remain first overall in the AUS standings with an 18-4-1-1 (W-L-OTL-SOL) record while the third place Tommies drop to 15-7-0-2.

The REDS skate back into action on Friday when they visit the STFX X-Women. Game time is 7:00pm.

The Tommies will be in Sackville to take on Mount Allison the same evening.
