McDougall Shines In AUS Debut
(SACKVILLE, NB) The UNB REDS swam to a second-place finish in the team standings at the Mount Allison Invitational, on Saturday.
UNB finished behind Dalhousie and in front of the host Mounties.
First-year RED Maria McDougall made a significant impression in her Atlantic University Sport debut, recording one win and three third place finishes.
McDougall swam to victory in the women’s 100-metre individual medley in a time of 1:08.99, almost two full seconds ahead of second place.
McDougall also swam third in the women’s 100-metre freestyle, 50-metre backstroke, and 50-metre breaststroke, where she was just 2/10ths of a second out of second place and just 4/10ths back of the race winner.
A pair of men swam to second place finishes.
Xavier LeBouthillier was second in the 800-metre freestyle and Will Franklin was second in the 100-metre free, where he finished a mere 2/10ths of a second out of first place. LeBouthillier was also third in the men’s 200-metre backstroke.
UNB’s Bronwyn Preece raced to third place in the women’s 800-metre freestyle.
In the men’s 200-metre free, first-year RED Nolan Oma was third, just ahead of teammate Edward Wares. Oma missed second place by 5/100ths of a second.
Veteran RED Blake Kingston swam to a pair of fourth place finishes. In the men’s 50-metre breaststroke, the top four finishers all touched the wall inside of 5/10ths of a second. In the 50-metre butterfly, he was 1/10th of a second out of second place and 4/100ths out of third.
In the women’s 50-metre freestyle, UNB’s Maggie Shackell was fourth, just 2/10ths of a second behind third place.
The next event on the AUS swimming schedule is the Dalhousie Invitational, November 8th and 9th, in Halifax.
