REDS Rally Past Tigers
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS completed a weekend sweep of the Dalhousie Tigers but had to come-from-behind on Saturday to do so.
The REDS beat the Tigers 3-2 in RSEQ men's volleyball action at UNB's Richard J. Currie Center with scores of 25-20, 23-25, 19-25, 25-13, and 15-13.
In the opening set, the visitors built an early 8-4 lead, forcing the REDS to rally almost from the beginning.
From down 15-12, UNB pushed forward and took a 17-16 lead on route to a 25-20 first set victory.
In the second, Dal once again built an early lead, and while the REDS were able to stay close, the Tigers held them off to win the set 25-23.
The close play continued in the third set with the teams tied 11-11 mid-way through.
From there, the Tigers pulled ahead and maintained their lead, winning 25-19 to take a two-sets-to-one lead.
The fourth set saw the REDS build the early lead, jumping out to a 7-1 advantage.
UNB never trailed in the fourth and won 25-13.
In the deciding set, UNB went up 4-3, but Dal kept pace. The REDS led by as much as four, but the visitors continuously closed the gap.
UNB did hang on to win the final set 15-13 for the 3-2 match victory.
Lucas Maffia and Finn McMorran led the REDS. Maffia recorded 13 kills and 10 digs, while McMorran had 10 digs and 31 assists.
First-year RED Alex Bourque recorded 19 digs, and Nicolas Losier added 13 kills.
Jacob Oyler had a game-high 14 kills for Dal, while Gabriel Moshett contributed 20 digs.
Samuel Gallagher pitched in with 36 assists.
UNB improves to 2-and-2 while Dal remains winless at 0-and-4.
The Tigers see their next action on Friday, when they host Laval.
The REDS return to action a week later, on Friday, November 14th, when they host Montreal in a 6:00pm start.
