REDS Win Streak Ends
(HALIFAX, NS) The UNB REDS win streak is over.
The Dalhousie Tigers beat the REDS 2-0 Saturday in Atlantic University Sport women's soccer action, UNB's first loss in eight games.
"We're disappointed to lose that one tonight," said REDS' head coach Jon Crossland. "It was going to be tough on the back-to-back and we didn't match their energy from the start."
It was a quiet first half with the Tigers holding much of the possession. REDS keeper Breanna Habinski (Welland, ON) made several key saves to keep the game knotted at zeros.
The second half started much the same as the first, until the 74' minute when REDS defender Evan Eyubeh (Mississauga, ON) fouled Elise Evans (Toronto, ON) just outside their box, resulting in a yellow card for Eyubeh. Olivia Jack (Stillwater Lake, NS) stepped up to take the free kick and curled it just inside the top corner to put the Tigers up 1-0 with 15 minutes to go.
The Tigers extended their lead as the clock hit 90' minutes when a long range shot from Taylor Heard (Ottawa, ON) was fumbled by the REDS keeper and found a way into the net.
"I thought we were re-grouped for the second and came out with a more energetic start," said Coach Crossland. "We just never really got into our game. We learned some lessons though and will take those into training and get ready for Mount A."
Jack was named Player of the Game after going the 90 minutes for the black and gold.
The Tigers return to the field on next Saturday when they travel to UPEI. Kick-off is set for 1:00pm.
UNB heads to Mount Allison the same day. The game is due to start at 1:00pm too.
